Car Crash Victim Gets $117 Million

The PR Newswire reported last week on a Louisiana jury that awarded $117 million to a woman who suffered severe injuries in an ambulance crash in December 2010. The woman was seven months pregnant when she was in the back of the ambulance on Louisiana Highway 1. The evidence showed that the ambulance driver was traveling at approximately 60 mph on a routine trip to the hospital. The victim initially called the ambulance because she was experiencing stomach pains.

However, the ambulance driver was driving without the emergency lights and sirens in operation. The ambulance crashed into the back of a truck, severely injuring the woman. She gave birth to her child prematurely, and the woman suffered a severed spinal cord and a traumatic brain injury in the accident. She has only limited use of one arm.

The ambulance driver had prior accidents on the job, and his employer failed to retrain him according to its internal policy. Witnesses also said that the driver failed to attempt to avoid the crash.
