What Can Happen When a Physician Fails to Diagnose?

A 51-year-old man died after being treated at East Jefferson General Hospital in Louisiana in 2011. He checked into the hospital complaining of chest pains. An emergency room doctor suspected that he was suffering from some sort of heart problem symptoms, and admitted the man into the hospital under the care of Stanley D. Bleich, M.D., a cardiologist.

Bleich ran tests and determined that there was no malfunction of the patient’s heart. The doctor gave the patient heartburn medication and sent him on his way. Four days later, the patient died in his home from a heart attack.

The autopsy showed that the patient suffered from a severe case of coronary artery disease that led to a ruptured artery and the patient’s death. His family filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the Louisiana Medical Mutual Insurance Company and Stanley D. Bleich for wrongful death, seeking an unspecified amount in damages.
