Mayor Seeks Help to Remove Asbestos from Higgins Gate Apartments

According to The Times-Picayune, Mayor Mitch Landrieu has been attempting to garner help from the Algiers Development District board in paying for the removal of asbestos waste from the area.

The asbestos is a part of acres of debris that Hurricane Katrina left in its wake. One of the worst hit areas in Algiers was the Higgins Gate Apartments, which according to the report has since Katrina “been an Algiers eyesore, an environmental problem and a source of civil and criminal court cases for years.

A former Algiers assessor who sits on the Development District board has estimated that the asbestos removal cost for Higgins Gate could reach $1 million.
