EPA Giving Louisiana $137,000 to Monitor Asbestos in Schools

According to WVLA, because of the amount of asbestos that has been found in Louisiana schools, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is giving the state money to improve its ability for asbestos detection in the facilities.

In 2013, asbestos was removed from several Louisiana schools, including:

  • Louisiana State University (LSU)
  • Brookstown Elementary School
  • Baker High School
  • Zachary Elementary School
  • Glen Oaks High School
  • Brownsfield Elementary School

Schools are tasked under state and federal law to keep children and employees safe from asbestos exposure, and districts are required to perform self-inspections. Hopefully, the $137,000 that Louisiana is receiving from the EPA will help the state’s schools better protect students and school workers from the dangers of asbestos exposure symptoms, including:

  • Lung Cancer
  • Asbestosis
  • Mesothelioma
