The case that the respiratory medicine specialists at Uji Tokushukai Medical Center detail in the report they recently published involved the treatment of intractable malignant pleural mesothelioma. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for mesothelioma, pleural or otherwise. However, there are mesothelioma treatment options that can help improve and prolong mesothelioma sufferers’ lives, of which, the most effective is considered to be a chemotherapy that combines cisplatin and pemetrexed (Alimta).
The problem with the cisplatin/pemetrexed chemotherapy is that patients often cannot handle the side effects of cisplatin, which can cause liver damage. However, what the Japanese scientists discovered was that if a patient could not handle cisplatin any longer, the patient could still continue treatment to completion with just pemetrexed-based chemotherapy (PMT) alone.
PMT is still in an experimental stage, but has shown that it could help extend the lives of mesothelioma patients.
