Louisiana Investigating New Orleans Asbestos Demolition Deal

The Times-Picayune is reporting that the state of Louisiana is investigating a demolition business, Hamp’s Construction Co., following its handling of asbestos at five sites, which are all managed by the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA)

In the report, it is revealed that documents and emails between Hamp’s Construction, NORA and state regulators show that the company may have demolished residences without testing for asbestos in the buildings. In addition, there is no record that Hamp’s Construction disposed of debris from the demolitions in a landfill certified to handle asbestos waste.

To make matters worse, analysis done by Advanced Environmental Consulting has found that some of the floor tiles in at least one of the buildings contained asbestos. NORA is no longer using Hamp’s Construction for its demolition projects and has hired Big Yellow Construction Co. to clean up the five sites demolished by Hamp’s.
