Community Center Receives $100,000 Grant for Asbestos Removal

The Poughkeepsie Journal recently reported that a local community center received a $100,000 grant, which will be used to rid it of asbestos.

Assemblyman Frank Skartados was the person who secured the grant for the Family Partnership Center, which is run by Family Services, a nonprofit social services organization. The community center, which is located in Poughkeepsie, was heavily damaged in 2011 by tropical storms Lee and Irene, including flood damage.

In addition to damaging the Family Partnership Center, the flooding revealed the presence of asbestos, which is the only known cause of mesothelioma cancer.
