Estrogen Receptor May Improve Mesothelioma Chemotherapy

According to survivingmesothelioma.com, a study by researchers revealed that an estrogen receptor might hold the key to making mesothelioma more sensitive to chemotherapy.

The study was conducted by pharmaceutical researchers in in Italy and Sweden at the University of Piemonte Orientale and the Karolinska Institute. The focus of the study was Estrogen Receptor Beta (ERbeta), which is an estrogen sensitive molecule in the nuclei of cells, and amongst other things, ERbeta can be helpful in suppressing the growth of tumors.

The researchers used KB9520 to activate the ERbeta in human mesothelioma cells, which enhanced the estrogen receptor’s tumor fighting effects and increased cell death. In addition, researchers gave KB9520 and a chemotherapy drug to mice with mesothelioma tumors, and the combination “significantly inhibited” the growth of the tumors.
