Could a Doctor Prescribe Me a Drug If I’m Allergic to It?

According to The Louisiana Record, a Gretna woman has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against a doctor for allegedly prescribing her a medication even though she was allergic to it.

The woman saw the doctor at the Pelican State Outpatient Center. She told the doctor that she was suffering from head congestion and a cough. After examining her, the woman alleges in her suit that he prescribed her a cough syrup that contains hydrocodone. The woman, who is allergic to hydrocodone, claims she told her doctor she was allergic to it and that the information is also mentioned in her medical records.

As a result of taking the cough syrup, the woman suffered an allergic reaction, including respiratory distress and anaphylaxis, and had to be hospitalized. The woman also claims that she has continued to deal with lung injuries since the incident.

In her suit, the woman is seeking compensation for medical expenses, physical pain and suffering, loss of earning capacity, emotional pain and suffering, exacerbation of her disability, loss of enjoyment of life and disfigurement.
