Have You Been Exposed to Asbestos?

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral. The fibers are microscopic but extremely strong and heat-resistant. For years, it was used in a variety of products, including roofing shingles, floor tiles, ceiling materials, insulation and automotive parts.

In the late 1970s, asbestos use dropped sharply after the health risks became apparent. The small fibers were easily inhaled into the lungs, where they would become lodged in the soft tissue. With no way for the body to expel the fibers, scar tissue formed around them, obstructing the airway.

Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure has been directly linked to three major lung conditions:

Lung cancer– Malignant tumors caused by uncontrolled cell growth in lung tissue.

Mesothelioma– A rare cancer that forms in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers many of the body’s internal organs.

Asbestosis– A chronic lung disease characterized by lung tissue scarring and shortness of breath.

Where Do You Find Asbestos?

Asbestos was used in thousands of commercial and industrial products before people knew the risks. Workers at power plants, construction sites and shipyards are all at a high risk of asbestos exposure. If they worked in these areas before 1980, they were almost certainly exposed.

There is no safe type of asbestos and no safe level of exposure. A high percentage of exposure victims  are at risk of serious health complications. If you are experiencing respiratory problems after working in a high-risk industry, consult a doctor immediately.

There are numerous benefits available for mesothelioma victims. To learn more about your legal options, consult a physician and a knowledgeable attorney.
