Are Sites That Were Polluted by Asbestos Still in Use?

According to WebMD, before health concerns were raised and federal regulations were implemented, asbestos was widely used in several products, including floor and ceiling tiles, paints, car clutch pads and brake shoes and building insulation. However, even though asbestos is no longer flooding the market as it once did, remnants of its heyday still pose a danger to public health.

Recently, a plan was put in motion to convert the former Houma Elementary School, which was vacated due to asbestos concerns, into an apartment complex. According to KATC-TV, prior to being vacated, the former school was serving as offices for 80 of the school district’s federal and special education services workers. However, the 80 employees had to be moved to a new location because of asbestos concerns.

In the aftermath of having to relocate the staff, the school board gave the facility to the parish.

“There have been a number of people who have approached the parish and indicated interest in the building, the property,” Parish President Michel Claudet said. “They want to change it into some type of housing for residents.”
