Could I Have Gotten Mesothelioma From Working as a Deckhand?

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), in the United States, employers are required by law to ensure that their employees’ working conditions are free of known dangers.

In New Orleans, a man has sued several companies, claiming that their negligence led to the on-the-job asbestos exposure that caused him to contract mesothelioma and lung cancer, according to The Louisiana Record. In his suit, the man alleges that he was exposed to asbestos and asbestos-containing products from 1979 to 1985, during which time he worked as a deckhand on drilling rigs at various work sites.

The suit accuses the companies of several acts of negligence that led directly to the man’s exposure to asbestos, including:

  • Lack of safety procedures for the adequate protection of workers
  • Not properly ventilating the work site
  • Failure to communicate to workers the dangers of working with asbestos
  • Not measuring the level of asbestos dust in the work site
  • Failing to ensure that asbestos-containing products included sufficient warnings
