Things You Should Know After a Car Crash

February 09, 2012 @ 05:02 AM — by Shirin Harrell

In the unfortunate event that you find yourself a victim in a car accident, knowing what to expect immediately afterward might put your mind at ease. There will be property damage to your vehicle in addition to any personal injury to you and the other driver.

The first thing you or someone else will do is call 911 to report the accident. The dispatcher will likely ask you if anyone is injured or needs medical attention, if either driver appears to be intoxicated or impaired and if the vehicles cannot be moved and are blocking traffic. In the event of a non-serious car crash, the dispatcher might tell you to exchange information with the other driver and to leave the scene.

However, if the accident has injuries and the vehicles are so damaged that they cannot be moved, emergency services will be on the scene. Rescue workers will treat and transport any injured persons to the hospital. Police officers know how to deal with car accidents and they will start the process of gathering all necessary information. They will collect any information from witnesses and take photographs.

Your auto insurance policy likely requires you to notify the insurance company of the accident. The insurance adjuster might attempt to settle your claims with you for less than your injuries are worth. If you are not comfortable with the negotiations, or you feel you are entitled to more compensation, a skilled personal injury attorney can help you.
