Wisconsin Woman says Yaz Caused her Blindness

November 09, 2011 @ 05:00 AM — by Shirin Harrell

Add this to the growing list of allegations surrounding the Yaz and Yasminbirth control pill – a 24-year-old woman says the Yaz pill put her in a coma and caused her to go blind. In a report at dailymail.co.uk, the Wisconsin woman started taking the birth control pill after seeing ads that it could ease her bloating and help clear her skin.

After three months of taking Yaz, her legs began to ache in February 2008. The following day, she was in the hospital experiencing difficulty in breathing. According to her doctors, the blood clots in her legs moved to her lungs, which cause a double pulmonary embolism. Her heart stopped and she was in a coma for about two weeks. She came out of her coma, but she lost her eyesight, which has still not returned.

On average, two to four women out of 10,000 will experience blood clots from birth control pills, according to the report. However, women who take Yaz will have a two to three times greater risk of blood clots. In addition, the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that the manufacturer exaggerated the benefits of Yaz helping to clear acne.
